Marco da Gagliano – The Complete Five Voice Madrigals
Edited by
Suzanne Court
The madrigals of Marco da Gagliano (1582-1643) have been recognized as “highly personal examples from the last years of the genre”. While Gagliano might lack the consummate vocal grace of a Marenzio, the harmonic daring of a Gesualdo, and the dramatic qualities of a Monteverdi, his madrigas are nonethe less well crafted and charming, and important as the last flowing of a genre which had dominated secular European composition for many generations.
