Luca Marenzio: The Complete Six Voice Madrigals
Edited by
John Steele and Suzanne Court
Luca Marenzio’s earliest books of madrigals show a preference for pastoral poetry, but by the time he produced the Fifth and Sixth Books for Six Voices (1591 and 1595), he was in a more serious vein. His earlier works showed a preference for the poems of Petrarch, Sannazaro, Tasso, Quirino, Tansillo and Guarini, with the first three books for five voices being particularly pastoral in tone. From, 1588 however he concentrated on cyclic composition, setting several passages from Guarini’s Il pastor fido, as well as multi-sectioned works of Tansillo and Petrarch which dominate the Sixth Book for Six Voices.
