Luca Marenzio: The Complete Five Voice Madrigals
Edited by
John Steele
Among the late Italian madrigalists, Luca Marenzio holds a special place (“For delicious air and sweet invention in madrigals, Luca Marenzio excelleth all other whatsoever.”) From the time of the publication of his first book in 1580, he was universally admired and his works were printed and reprinted all over Europe. He was famous in Germany and the Low Countries, in both of which publishers issued collected editions of his works. No other composer of secular music until that time had earned such distinction. The English were particularly fond of his work, and translated versions of his madrigals figured prominently in anthologies published there.
